Oracle Drops $7 Billion Tencent AI Chip Rental Deal Following US Government Pressure

The five-year agreement would have given the Chinese company access to 100,000 advanced accelerators in Oracle data centres across Southeast Asia.

Oracle has cancelled a multibillion-dollar agreement with Tencent to rent computing capacity for artificial intelligence following pressure from the administration of US President Donald Trump. The Financial Times reported the development, citing sources familiar with the matter.

According to the publication, US officials directly contacted Oracle and expressed concerns about the deal.

Tencent also faced pressure from Chinese authorities. According to the Financial Times, representatives of the leadership of Guangdong province, where the company is based, visited Tencent’s offices and asked it to support domestic chip manufacturers.

The Financial Times first reported the agreement approximately one month earlier. Valued at around $7 billion, it was expected to become Tencent’s largest overseas contract for renting computing capacity.

The five-year agreement would have involved deploying approximately 100,000 advanced AI accelerators across several Oracle data centres in Southeast Asia. These chips are unavailable in China due to US export restrictions and Beijing’s own limitations.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the cancellation of the contract. Oracle, Tencent and the White House did not respond to the agency’s requests for comment.
