Paris AI Summit: The Future of Artificial Intelligence

On February 10-11, Paris will host the AI Action Summit, which will focus on critical issues such as the fair global distribution of AI, the control of AI by major technology companies, and the role of open-source models. The summit aims to find a balance between the risks and benefits of AI.

Co-hosted by the governments of France and India, the event will gather representatives from nearly 100 countries, including prominent guests such as Zhang Guoqing, Vice Premier of China, and J.D. Vance, Vice President of the United States.

Benefits and Risks of AI

While the first AI Safety Summit hosted by the UK last year primarily focused on the potential risks of AI, the Paris summit aims to highlight the vast potential of AI in areas such as education, healthcare, and scientific research (including biology, chemistry, and physics).

However, the dangers of AI will not be overlooked. The 2025 International AI Security Report will provide extensive insights into risks like fraud, psychological manipulation, deepfakes, impacts on the job market, and personal security threats.

The AI Race Between the U.S. and China

In recent years, the U.S. and China have emerged as global leaders in AI development. Chinese tech company DeepSeek has demonstrated technologies comparable to those developed by U.S. AI firms, intensifying the global competition.

France is taking a proactive approach by establishing the AI Safety Institute (INESIA) to offer new strategies for managing AI-related risks. Meanwhile, the Trump administration in the U.S. has reversed previous regulations on responsible AI usage and adopted a different strategy.

AI and Environmental Impacts

The development of AI requires significant computing power and energy consumption. The 2025 International AI Security Report predicts that AI's energy consumption could increase by 24 times by 2030, raising concerns about environmental risks and highlighting the need for sustainability.

To address this issue, institutions like Ecole Normale Superieure and Cap Gemini have established new initiatives to analyze the environmental impact of AI and promote the development of more eco-friendly AI systems.

Privacy and Copyright Challenges

AI raises serious concerns regarding privacy violations and copyright issues. AI models often collect users' personal data, leading to privacy breaches. Additionally, AI poses significant challenges for journalists, artists, and musicians by complicating copyright protections. Major corporations, especially in the banking and finance sectors, are taking strong measures to mitigate these risks.

The Role of Open-Source AI

One of the key topics of discussion at the summit will be whether AI should remain under the control of large tech companies or be more open and accessible. Open-source AI technologies are being highlighted as essential for fostering innovation and fair competition.

Tech organizations such as Mozilla advocate for supporting open-source AI to ensure that the technology remains accessible and not controlled by a few corporations. This approach could strengthen competition and make AI more accessible for everyone.

Key Questions for the Future of AI

The Paris AI Action Summit will host critical discussions on the global distribution, safety, and responsible use of AI. How will the balance between competition and cooperation among the U.S., China, and European countries be established? This will be one of the summit’s most pressing questions.

The future of AI depends on how the world manages and governs this technology. The Paris Summit serves as a reminder that global collaboration is essential to make AI safe and beneficial for all.
