Perplexity AI acquires Visual Electric, a Startup for AI-Powered image creation

Perplexity AI has acquired Visual Electric, a startup that enables designers to create images with AI support. The exact financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Founded in 2022 by Colin Dunn, Adam Menges, and Zach Stiggelbout, Visual Electric allowed users to generate visual content simply by typing text, while also giving them the freedom to edit and work on these visuals. Since its inception, the young company had raised a total of $2.5 million from investors including Sequoia Capital and BoxGroup.

What set Visual Electric apart from other AI-visual tools was its “infinite canvas” approach — an unlimited workspace that let designers place ideas side by side, refine them as if on a whiteboard, and experiment with multiple variations seamlessly.

Under the acquisition agreement, Visual Electric’s service will be discontinued within the next three months. The company announced that subscribers will be refunded and provided with options to transfer their data to other platforms.

This move suggests that Perplexity AI intends to integrate Visual Electric’s visual content creation technology into its search platform.
