Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken a tough stance against foreign technology companies. In a statement on May 26, he said that foreign service providers such as Microsoft and Zoom, which operate against Russia's interests, should be "restricted."
Putin emphasized the importance of developing domestic software and technological solutions to counter such threats. According to the president, creating competitive local alternatives based on internal resources is strategically crucial for ensuring the country’s technological sovereignty.
This statement is seen as part of the Russian government's ongoing efforts in recent years to enhance information security and achieve technological independence. Especially amid growing tensions with Western countries, Moscow’s trust in foreign technologies appears to be declining.
Previously, Russian officials have also taken steps against certain technology platforms, citing their failure to comply with local legislation or the storage of Russian user data on foreign servers.
Experts believe that while such restrictions may cause short-term difficulties in certain tech sectors, they could ultimately contribute to Russia’s long-term goal of technological self-reliance.
