Medical teams arriving at the scene determined that Yusuf Serdar Yücel, who was lying motionless, had died. After Yücel's body was brought to his hometown of Isparta, he was buried in Sav, Central District, after the noon prayer yesterday. According to the information obtained, it was determined that Yücel committed suicide by drinking sodium nitrate and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
WHAT IS SODIUM NITRATE?
Sodium nitrate is a chemical compound with the formula NaNO3. This white crystalline salt, called Chilean nitrate (so named because it is found in large quantities in this country), is more soluble in water than potassium nitrate to distinguish it from saltpeter. It absorbs moisture from the air.
Sodium nitrate was used in food additives and fertilizers, as a pyrotechnic material, in smoke bombs, and as a solid rocket fuel.
