Spotify introduces payment links without Apple commission in the U.S

Spotify announced that Apple has approved its app update for the U.S., allowing users to access pricing information and external payment links. The approval comes just days after a U.S. court ordered Apple to stop charging commissions on purchases made through iPhone apps.

“This is a win for consumers, artists, creators, and authors,” said Spotify spokesperson Jeanne Moran in a statement to TechCrunch. “After nearly a decade, we can finally display clear pricing and offer purchase links, promoting transparency and choice for U.S. consumers.”

She added, “Now, we can provide users with lower prices, more control, and easier access to the Spotify experience. While there’s still work to be done, today marks a significant step forward for developers and entrepreneurs seeking a fairer playing field. This is the beginning of a new era—and we’re ready.”

The updated app, version 9.0.40, is now rolling out on the App Store. Spotify submitted the update to Apple with plans to inform users about subscription options and their costs directly within the iPhone app. Users will also be able to link to Spotify’s website to purchase or modify their subscription plans, avoiding Apple’s 30% in-app purchase commission. Additionally, Spotify will now be able to promote special offers to U.S. customers within the app.

Apple stated on Wednesday that it will comply with the court's order, though it strongly disagrees with the ruling and plans to appeal. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers determined that Apple violated a previous order to reform the App Store by continuing to block developers from directing users to external purchasing options. The judge ruled that Apple acted willfully, aiming to establish new anticompetitive barriers.
