Tesla has started testing a robotaxi without an operator in the cabin in Austin, USA. Against this background, the company's shares are approaching their annual maximum.
According to TechCrunch, on December 13, 2025, a video of a Tesla Model Y car with an empty cabin was shared on social networks. The head of the company, Elon Musk, confirmed that robotaxi trips are being tested in an operator-free mode, but said that these trips are not yet available to passengers.
According to Reuters, after these news, Tesla shares rose by 4.9%, approaching the annual maximum of $ 488.54. Investors and analysts believe that the company can complete the tests “in the near future” and launch an operator-free robotaxi service.
Tesla began testing robotaxi in Austin in June 2025. Currently, a company employee who monitors safety during trips is in the car. According to TechCrunch, the test fleet in the city consists of about 25-30 cars.
According to reports filed by the company with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla robo-taxis have been involved in at least seven accidents since testing began, but details about those accidents have not been released.
