At the quarterly report event, the head of Tesla confirmed that the introduction of the driverless Cybercab taxi has been postponed from August 8 to October.
Musk attributed the delay to the need to make "significant changes to the front design" of the car. He also mentioned the possibility of using this time to demo "a few more things". Tesla's self-driving taxi should be deprived of the usual controls originally intended for humans. The entire platform of such a vehicle will be optimized for maximum profit in commercial passenger transport.
In a quarterly earnings call, Elon Musk questioned the feasibility of plans to introduce self-driving technology that does not require driver control by the end of this year. Musk, who began equipping all Tesla electric cars with autopilot equipment in 2016, had hoped to have them self-driving by the end of 2019, but that deadline has been repeatedly pushed back. Musk's current forecast suggests that these plans will be implemented by the end of 2024.
