Samsung Electronics has completed the design of Tesla's AI5 chip for autonomous driving systems. Industry sources said the chip will soon begin production at the company's semiconductor plant in Taylor, Texas, the US.
According to the report, James Kim, a lead engineer at Samsung Foundry, said in a since-deleted LinkedIn post that Tesla-Samsung AI5 chip had successfully completed the tape-out phase. Tape-out means that the chip design has been finalized and transferred to the production phase.
The chip will be manufactured using Samsung's 2-nanometer manufacturing technology. In April this year, Elon Musk also announced that the design of the AI5 chip had been submitted to both Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for production.
The AI5 will be the successor to the AI4 autonomous driving computer currently used in Tesla cars and manufactured using Samsung's 7-nanometer technology.
