The Biggest Data Breaches of 2025 so Far

As of early 2025, several major data breaches have occurred, compromising the personal information of millions. These breaches include student registrations, phone data, and sensitive health information.

In 2024 alone, over a billion pieces of data were stolen. Comparing this with the first two months of 2025, it seems that this year will likely set a record for data breaches.

PowerSchool Data Breach: Student and Teacher Personal Information Stolen

One of the largest student data breaches in recent years occurred with PowerSchool. The company revealed that 62 million students and 9.5 million teachers were affected.

PowerSchool is a company that provides educational technology services to over 18,000 schools. In January, the company disclosed the breach. Hackers gained access to the school’s data system by logging into the company’s customer service portal with a password. They stole highly sensitive personal data, including students' grades, medical records, and Social Security numbers.

PowerSchool has not yet fully disclosed the exact number of registrations stolen, but reports suggest the number could reach millions. For example, in Texas, over 800,000 individuals had their data stolen, and in the Rochester City School District, 134,000 students’ data was leaked.

Elon Musk and DOGE Agency Data Breach

At the start of 2025, another significant data breach occurred within the U.S. government. The DOGE agency, led by Elon Musk, infiltrated major U.S. government systems and stole the personal information of millions of Americans. DOGE is primarily made up of Musk’s company employees, and they were able to access sensitive government data. This breach has become one of the U.S. government's biggest cybersecurity issues.

Community Health Center Major Data Breach

In January, Community Health Center (CHC), based in Connecticut, revealed that a hacker had gained access to the personal data of over 1 million patients. This information included addresses, phone numbers, medical results, and Social Security numbers. The stolen data has had a widespread impact, affecting a large number of people.

Stalkerware Apps Data Breach

Stalkerware apps like Cocospy, Spyic, and Spyzie have secretly stolen users' personal information. These apps can intercept messages, photos, and call logs from users’ phones. Security researchers found a vulnerability in these apps, leading to the exposure of 3.2 million email addresses.

DISA Data Breach

DISA, a worker verification service based in Texas, revealed in January that it had experienced a major data breach in April 2024. The breach affected the personal data of 3.3 million individuals. Stolen data included Social Security numbers, financial information, and government documents.

These data breaches are among the most significant incidents of 2025 so far and have raised serious concerns about data security this year.
