The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a lawsuit against Uber. The allegations claim that Uber misled users regarding its "Uber One" subscription service. According to the FTC, Uber made it difficult to cancel subscriptions easily and charged users without their consent.
FTC Chairwoman Lina M. Khan stated that Americans are tired of struggling to cancel unnecessary services. The commission reports that Uber intentionally complicated the cancellation process. Some users were advised to contact customer support, but no effective means of communication was provided. Additionally, in some cases, even after the subscription was officially canceled, Uber continued to charge users.
A spokesperson for Uber denied the allegations and stated they would defend their position in court. They emphasized that no charges are made without user consent and that subscriptions can be canceled in less than 20 seconds via the app.
The Uber One service has been available since 2021, with a monthly subscription fee of $9.99 and an annual subscription fee of $96. The service offers users free delivery on Uber Eats and discounts on orders.
In the fall of 2024, the FTC announced that many companies are intentionally complicating subscription cancellations, creating significant challenges for users. The commission emphasized that new rules would be implemented to ensure subscriptions could be canceled easily with a single click. However, some industry associations have filed lawsuits against this initiative.
