Although TikTok is a social media platform notable for its popularity and number of users, it continues to be banned in many countries due to abuse. Nepal has also joined the countries that have banned TikTok. Nepal's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, said that TikTok was disrupting social harmony and there was a growing demand to control abuses. He announced that the ban was adopted at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday.
It was reported that more than 1600 cases of cybercrime related to TikTok were registered in Nepal in the last 4 years. However, the ban has drawn criticism as many have argued that other social media platforms also contain objectionable content and should be regulated. TikTok's ban in Nepal once again brings to the fore the regulatory and banning issues the platform faces around the world.
