TikTok is developing a new version of its app for U.S. users as part of preparations for a potential sale of its American operations to a group of investors.
According to former U.S. President Donald Trump, talks with China regarding a possible TikTok deal are expected to begin in the coming days. Trump has stated that the U.S. has “pretty much” reached an agreement on the sale of the app.
The new version of TikTok is planned to be released in U.S. app stores on September 5. The current version of the app will continue to function until March 2026, though that date could change. Eventually, users will be required to download the new app in order to continue using the service.
Previous plans called for TikTok's U.S. operations to be spun off into a new company, owned and operated by U.S. investors. However, that process was delayed after China signaled that it would likely oppose the deal, especially in light of Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods.
TikTok and relevant parties have not yet issued any official comments.
These developments raise questions about TikTok’s future position in the U.S. market and are seen as a critical turning point for the platform’s continued operation in the country.
