X is launching a new marketplace service aimed at redistributing usernames that have been inactive for a long time. This new service will be available exclusively to Premium+ and Premium Business subscribers.
Usernames Offered in Two Main Categories:
Usernames available for acquisition are divided into two categories, forming an important part of X’s new revenue strategy:
1. Priority Names (Free):
This category includes more common usernames — for example, full names, multi-word expressions, or letter-number combinations.
Premium subscribers will be able to claim these usernames at no additional cost.
2. Rare Names (Paid):
This category is paid, with prices starting from $2,500 USD and potentially reaching seven-figure amounts, depending on demand and uniqueness. Subscribers can browse a list of “inactive” usernames, apply for them, or directly purchase the rare ones offered.
If a new username is approved, the user’s previous one will be “frozen,” meaning it cannot be claimed by anyone else. However, if the user downgrades or cancels their subscription, they may lose the newly acquired username — the system will revert it to its previous state.
With this new service, X aims to create an additional revenue stream amid challenges in advertising income and growth pressures. Strengthening subscription-based revenue is positioned as a key part of the company’s strategic plan. At the same time, the platform seeks to meet user demand for memorable, brand-friendly, and distinctive usernames.
Nevertheless, over the long term, it remains to be seen how this system will affect user satisfaction and whether it will lead to potential inequalities between Premium subscribers and regular users.
