The Albanian government has taken an unprecedented step by including an artificial intelligence bot in its cabinet of ministers. The bot, named Diella, which means “sun” in Albanian, is responsible for managing government operations and handling contracts with companies.
Prime Minister Edi Rama introduced Diella as “the first minister with no physical existence, created entirely digitally by artificial intelligence.” According to Rama, this move aims to address one of the country’s biggest structural problems: corruption.
Albania has long been known for scandals involving bribery and money laundering. Allegations suggest that revenues from drug and illegal arms trafficking have infiltrated politics, complicating the country’s path toward European Union membership.
Although Rama aims for EU membership by 2030, experts argue that this goal is unrealistic without a permanent solution to corruption. Here, Diella steps in to eliminate the human factor, removing opportunities for bribery and conflicts of interest. According to the Prime Minister, future tenders in Albania will be “100% corruption-free.”
