In the first quarter of 2024, users spent $3.8 billion on mobile entertainment apps. This is reported in the Streaming App Report report prepared by Appfigures.
Of this amount, $2.1 billion was spent on streaming apps, and $0.9 billion was spent on short video services such as TikTok. Spending on streaming services increased by 383% over the same period in 2019, while revenue from music streaming apps increased by 191%.
The biggest growth was shown by short video services, which saw a 1,500% increase in revenue thanks to users spending to reward streamers.
The Appfigures report only considers mobile payments and doesn't include revenue from smart-TV or internet subscriptions, which is especially relevant for services like Netflix that try to avoid paying digital store commissions.
