Meta's head of AI research steps down from position

Joelle Pineau, Meta's Vice President of AI Research, announced on Facebook that she plans to leave the company. Pineau, who has overseen FAIR, Meta's internal AI research lab led by Yann LeCun, for over two years, will step down in May 2023 after leading the lab for more than two years.

Pineau's departure comes at a time when Meta is intensifying its efforts in artificial intelligence. The company plans to invest $65 billion in AI infrastructure in 2025.

A Meta spokesperson told Bloomberg News that no replacement has been appointed for Pineau yet, but the search for her successor is underway. Last year, Meta reorganized, placing the AI research division under the leadership of Chris Cox, the company's Chief Product Officer.

Pineau has stated that she plans to take some time off before embarking on a new "adventure."
