Apple Plans to Add AI Search Engines Like OpenAI, Perplexity, and Anthropic to Safari
Apple is planning to integrate AI search engines such as OpenAI, Perplexity, and Anthropic into its Safari browser, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, made this statement during his testimony in the U.S. Justice Department’s lawsuit against Alphabet. Cue discussed the estimated $20 billion annual deal between Apple and Google, which makes Google the default search engine on Safari.
Cue noted that searches on Safari declined for the first time last month, attributing this change to the growing use of AI. He also mentioned that AI search engines are likely to replace traditional search engines like Google in the future, which is why Apple is actively working to add these services to its browser. However, Cue emphasized that these AI services are not yet ready to become the default search engine, as they still require further improvement.
Apple has already had discussions with Perplexity, Cue revealed.
