Apple launches next-generation “CarPlay Ultra” vehicle interface

Apple has officially launched the new version of its CarPlay software — “CarPlay Ultra”, which it introduced three years ago and described as a new milestone in automotive technology. The next-generation interface will first be available in Aston Martin vehicles across the United States and Canada.

Unlike previous versions, CarPlay Ultra extends beyond the central touchscreen and also integrates with the driver’s digital dashboard, offering deeper integration with the vehicle’s internal systems. This allows key information such as speed, fuel consumption, trip data, and water temperature to be displayed directly on the CarPlay interface.

The new system can control certain vehicle functions, but only when used with an iPhone 12 or newer, running iOS 18.5 or later. At the same time, essential safety functions — such as rear-view cameras — will continue to operate independently of the CarPlay interface, ensuring driver safety.

Apple has stated that some existing Aston Martin models will also receive CarPlay Ultra via a software update through local dealerships in the coming weeks. In addition, Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have agreed to collaborate with Apple to adopt the new system in their upcoming models.

With the launch of CarPlay Ultra, Apple takes a significant step forward in competing with Google’s Android Auto platform, which recently announced the integration of its generative AI model, Gemini, into the system.

One reason for the delayed rollout, Apple says, was the extensive work required to align the software’s visual identity with each automaker’s brand and design philosophy. The company notes that close collaboration with manufacturers like Aston Martin enabled the development of custom themes and user-personalizable designs.

However, despite Apple’s initial 2022 WWDC announcement that CarPlay Ultra would be available across 14 car brands, at least one of them — Mercedes-Benz — has since publicly declined to adopt the system.

In conclusion, CarPlay Ultra marks a transition from a basic infotainment interface to a comprehensive vehicle management platform, signaling Apple’s deeper involvement in the automotive technology sector.
