OpenAI’s ChatGPT app surpassed 1 billion monthly users in May 2025, according to market research firm Sensor Tower.
ChatGPT remains the world’s largest AI app by monthly users, according to the report. However, some rival platforms have seen faster growth over the past year. Sensor Tower estimates that Anthropic’s Claude app grew its user base by 640% year-over-year, while Meta AI grew by 973%. ChatGPT grew by 62% over the same period.
The 1 billion figure is primarily for mobile users. ChatGPT first launched as a web app in November 2022, with an iPhone app launching in May 2023 and an Android version in July of the same year.
According to a survey by Boston Consulting Group, 74% of frontline workers now use AI tools regularly.
