Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, said on June 12 that its main problem is no longer a shortage of water or energy, but a shortage of skilled workers. The company's CEO, C.C. Wei, said on June 12 that recent rains and the government's plans to connect reservoirs have significantly reduced concerns about water supply.
TSMC and other semiconductor companies have been concerned about the risks of water, energy, land, labor and talent shortages for years. In particular, during the 2021 drought in Taiwan, the industry faced severe water restrictions.
Analysts say the shortage of workers now covers the entire chip supply chain. Taiwan's semiconductor industry had more than 35,000 vacancies as of early 2022. The government has been taking steps to attract foreign specialists to the country and simplify work permits. Meanwhile, TSMC continues to expand in international markets.
