In recent years, micromobility vehicles, especially electric scooters, have been rapidly gaining popularity in Azerbaijan. Electric scooters are being seen as a less environmentally-friendly alternative to urban transport. Currently, 283 special parking spaces for scooters have been created in Baku. Thanks to the safe and modern infrastructure created by state institutions, including the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency, and micromobility companies, this development is expected to continue. Bolt, Europe’s largest micromobility provider, has made nearly 700 scooters available for use by city residents in Baku. In rainy, windy or cold weather – when you encounter different weather conditions – we offer special recommendations to ensure the safety of both drivers and other road users.
1. Adapting Speed to Road Conditions
In rainy weather, roads can be slippery and potholes may be less visible, so it is important to choose a safe speed. Bolt scooters can travel at a maximum speed of 25 km/h, but it is not recommended to always reach the maximum speed. It is recommended not to exceed 15 km/h, especially on turns and at the beginning of the journey.
2. Use Bike Lanes
While it is permissible to ride slowly on sidewalks, it is safer to ride in bike lanes. To avoid collisions, keep enough distance between yourself and other road users so that you can safely stop or overtake if necessary.
3. Obey the Driving Rules
Behavior such as tandem riding lowers your “Reckless Rider” rating and, if continued, may result in removal from the Bolt platform. To mitigate this risk, Bolt offers Rider Academy training materials in the app for new users and reckless drivers. This program has reduced reckless driving by 20%.
4. Obey the Traffic Rules
Following signs, using crossings correctly, and showing respect for other road users are the main conditions for safety. In Baku, electric scooters and bicycles have equal right of way. The use of scooters is also provided in specially designated bike lanes. Like cyclists, electric scooters must follow traffic lights and traffic rules.
Additionally, in drizzly, foggy weather conditions, it is recommended to wear reflectors and reflective clothing, use the scooter's lights, and make sure the reflectors are working properly.
