Google explained that this change was made in accordance with updates from official government sources. The name change will only be shown to users in the US. In Mexico, users will still see "Gulf of Mexico," while users in other parts of the world will see "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)."
The change is based on an executive order issued by President Donald Trump in January to rename the Gulf, aiming to promote American greatness. The Mexican government has argued that the US does not have the right to change the name. Google stated that the change was made after the US government officially recognized the update.
Additionally, Trump declared February 9 as "Gulf of America Day" and urged US citizens to observe the day. The Mexican president has asked Google not to change the name, arguing that it contradicts international law. Many US media outlets, including the Associated Press (AP), have kept the name "Gulf of Mexico" in their style guides.
Trump also requested that North America's tallest mountain, Denali, be renamed back to "Mount McKinley," but this change has not yet been reflected on Google Maps.
