Alphabet-owned Google announced on Thursday that it has resolved a brief global technical outage that disrupted several of its core services. The interruption also impacted platforms like Spotify, Snapchat, and Discord, as they rely on Google’s cloud infrastructure.
In its official statement, Google said:
“The issue with Google Chat, Google Meet, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Cloud Search, Google Tasks, and Google Voice has been resolved for all affected users.”
The company also noted that it will release a full incident analysis after completing its internal investigation.
The disruption began at 1:50 PM ET, and according to data from Downdetector.com, by 2:32 PM ET, there were 14,729 outage reports for Google Cloud in the U.S. alone.
During the peak of the outage, Spotify received over 46,000 reports, while Discord logged 10,992. By the evening, these numbers had dropped to around 1,000 for Spotify and 200 for Discord.
According to the Google Cloud status dashboard, engineering teams are still working to resolve residual impacts on a few services.
It’s worth noting that Downdetector statistics are based on user-submitted reports, meaning the actual number of affected users may have been higher than reported.
This incident highlights the growing global dependence on digital infrastructure, and how even short-lived outages can cause widespread disruption across multiple platforms.
