Huawei to pilot 10 Gbit/s optical network in Kazakhstan

Huawei is preparing to launch a test of a high-speed 10 Gbit/s optical internet network in Kazakhstan, according to Sun Yaxiu, head of Huawei Kazakhstan. He announced the initiative during the "China–Central Asia" industrial-investment forum, where a memorandum was signed with Astana Innovations .

The pilot network is expected to position Kazakhstan competitively on the global stage by enhancing its digital infrastructure. However, the official launch timeline in Astana has not yet been disclosed .

This initiative builds on Huawei’s earlier deployment in China, where in April 2025, the company and China Unicom launched a 50G PON (Passive Optical Network) network delivering near 10 Gbit/s download speeds—up to 9 834 Mbit/s downlink and 1 008 Mbit/s.

50G PON is a next-generation fiber-standardized technology that supports symmetrical speeds up to 50 Gbit/s on optical line terminals. It offers low latency, robust bandwidth, and scalable infrastructure—ideal for high-demand applications like UHD video, cloud services, enterprise networking, and 5G transport.

Deploying such a network in Kazakhstan would significantly strengthen the country's digital economy, enabling advanced services in industry, education, and healthcare, improving international competitiveness and attracting foreign investment. Huawei’s expertise from its Chinese deployments is expected to be a key asset in the project’s success.
