Indian government asks Meta to stop WhatsApp username feature

The Indian government has asked Meta to temporarily suspend the use of a username feature planned for WhatsApp in the country and provide a detailed explanation within three days. Officials believe that the new feature could increase the risk of fake profiles, impersonation and fraud.

The feature, which is expected to be launched by the end of the year, will allow users to contact each other without sharing their phone numbers. Meta said that linking WhatsApp with Facebook and Instagram accounts through the Accounts Center will remain voluntary. According to the company, existing Facebook and Instagram usernames will be reserved for their owners, while usernames belonging to celebrities, government agencies and verified Meta accounts will be under special protection.

In addition, it is reported that the new feature will also serve to make it easier for businesses to be found by customers. However, users and experts have expressed concerns about data sharing and cross-platform integration. Meta stressed that usernames will not change the principles of data sharing in the Accounts Center.
