Meta to acquire AI startup scale ai for $14.8 billion

Scale AI, founded in 2016, provides large amounts of labeled and curated training data essential for developing advanced AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

According to reports, the deal, which has not yet been finalized, is expected to benefit Scale AI’s current and former employees, as well as investors including Accel, Index Ventures, Founders Fund, and Greenoaks.

As part of the agreement, Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang will lead a new “superintelligence” lab within Meta.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been actively recruiting top AI researchers to strengthen the company’s position in the AI race. The company is working to dispel concerns about falling behind after the April release of its Llama 4 model underperformed expectations.

Additionally, Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp are under antitrust scrutiny. According to The Information, the structure of the deal with Scale AI is designed to avoid additional regulatory hurdles.

Scale AI was valued at $13.8 billion during a funding round last spring. The company generated approximately $870 million in revenue in 2024 and expects to exceed $2 billion by the end of this year. It also reportedly held over $900 million in cash on its balance sheet at the end of last year.

This deal marks a significant step for Meta to strengthen its leadership in artificial intelligence and gain a competitive edge in the market.
