An unprecedented event has taken place in Nepal’s political history: the country’s new prime minister was chosen through a vote held on the social media platform Discord. This decision came in the wake of large-scale protests led primarily by the younger generation.
September 9, 2025: Former Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli’s decision to ban social media platforms sparked nationwide demonstrations. At least 72 people were killed and more than 2,100 injured during the protests.
September 12, 2025: Amid this turmoil, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed as Nepal’s first female prime minister after securing the most support in an informal vote organized by young activists on Discord.
Protesters had gathered on a Discord server created by Sudan Gurung, head of the civil society organization Hami Nepal. Karki’s candidacy, which received the highest backing in the vote, was later endorsed by the president and military leadership, formalizing her appointment as prime minister.
This process marked a break from traditional political structures and highlighted the growing role of young people in Nepal’s political participation.
Sushila Karki, who became Nepal’s first female Chief Justice in 2016, is widely recognized for her tough stance against corruption. Upon taking office, she pledged to provide financial assistance of 1 million rupees (approximately USD 11,330) to the families of those killed during the protests and promised free medical care for the injured.
Karki will lead a caretaker government until the next general elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. During this period, she plans to appoint a new cabinet and implement urgent measures to restore stability in the country.
