New artificial intelligence to be developed for South Korea's defense industry

South Korean technology giant Naver, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Naver Cloud are starting to develop a basic model of artificial intelligence (AI) for the defense industry. The parties signed a memorandum of understanding on July 6 at KAI’s headquarters in Sacheon.

The project will combine Naver’s AI and cloud technologies with KAI’s aerospace engineering expertise and capabilities in defense systems integration. The AI model to be developed aims to create an AI platform for autonomous flight and mission execution of unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as for next-generation combat systems.

KAI has expanded its activities in the field of unmanned aviation since developing the Songgolmae reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle, which was put into service with the South Korean military in 2001. The company is currently working on autonomous vertical take-off and landing systems, strike UAVs and unmanned combat aircraft.

For Naver, this collaboration is part of the company’s “sovereign AI” strategy. Naver Cloud stated that it ensures data protection within the country and has 17 compliance certificates and attestations in this area.
