According to renowned tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI is developing its first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered physical device, which is expected to take the form of a smart necklace. Instead of a screen, the device will be equipped with a microphone and camera, allowing it to sense the surrounding environment. The concept design for the device has been introduced by well-known designer Ben Geskin.
While detailed specifications remain unclear, the device is reportedly intended for tasks such as environmental recognition, processing voice commands, and operating through cloud-based AI services. Due to these functionalities, it will require a constant internet connection.
Kuo suggests that OpenAI announced the project immediately after Google’s I/O event to shift the spotlight toward itself. He also notes that a prototype of the device is expected to be unveiled in 2026, with mass production and public availability not anticipated before 2027.
This move signals OpenAI’s ambition to become a significant player not only in software but also in the hardware and consumer technology market.
