OpenAI Introduces Operator — An AI Agent That Performs Tasks for Users on the Web
OpenAI has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) agent called Operator. This agent can help users complete tasks such as filling out forms, ordering products, or creating memes.
Operator is currently available in the US in a “research preview” to ChatGPT Pro subscribers. The company did not share information about when the feature will be available to other paid users or whether it will be fully integrated into ChatGPT.
Operator works on the basis of the Computer-Using Agent (CUA) model. This model combines the “vision” of GPT-4o with “logical reasoning advanced through reinforcement learning.”
The company notes that users can take control of the web browser at any time. The Operator can ask the user for help with tasks such as account logins, entering payment information, or solving CAPTCHAs. The agent neither stores the data nor takes screenshots when entering sensitive data.
In addition, the agent will ask for confirmation from the user before performing some tasks. For example, when placing an order or sending an email. OpenAI also said that security measures have been implemented to prevent abuse of the Operator.
