OpenAI is reportedly working on a social media platform similar to X (formerly known as Twitter). According to sources, an internal prototype has already been developed, featuring a social feed powered by ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities. Additionally, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been informally seeking feedback from external individuals about the project. It remains unclear whether the social network will be launched as a standalone application or integrated into ChatGPT. OpenAI has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment.
This move is likely to further escalate tensions between Sam Altman and Elon Musk, the owner of X and a co-founder of OpenAI who left the company in 2018. Since then, OpenAI has become a frontrunner in the generative AI space.
Relations between the two have grown more strained in recent months. In February, a group of investors led by Musk made a $97.4 billion unsolicited offer to take control of OpenAI, which Altman swiftly rejected with a “no thank you.”
Last year, Musk filed a lawsuit against Altman and OpenAI, accusing them of abandoning the company’s original mission — to develop AI for the benefit of humanity. In response, earlier this month OpenAI filed a countersuit against Musk, accusing him of trying to sabotage the company’s shift to a for-profit model. The legal battle is expected to go to trial in spring 2026.
The potential launch of a new social network would also place OpenAI in direct competition with tech giants like Meta (Facebook), which is reportedly developing its own standalone AI service. In response to news about Meta’s plans, Altman tweeted in February: “ok fine maybe we'll do a social app.”
Meta and X already have a significant advantage in AI training due to their access to massive amounts of user-generated public data. With OpenAI entering this space, the competition in the AI-powered social media landscape is expected to heat up even more.
