OpenAI is preparing to acquire Windsurf for $3 billion

OpenAI is in talks to acquire Windsurf (formerly known as Codeium), a company that offers AI-powered tools to simplify coding for developers, for approximately $3 billion. According to sources, this potential deal could become the largest acquisition in OpenAI’s history.

Windsurf provides an AI-based coding assistant designed to automate and streamline the programming process. Competing with GitHub’s Copilot, the tool has been gaining popularity among developers. In an era where artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving, the company offers innovative solutions that aim to speed up daily coding tasks and allow developers to focus more on creative problem-solving.

In August 2024, Windsurf raised $150 million in a funding round led by General Catalyst, which valued the company at $1.25 billion. The doubling of its valuation in just a few months highlights the growing interest and fierce competition in the AI space. OpenAI’s willingness to offer such a high price reflects Windsurf’s strong potential in the market.

The deal also signals OpenAI’s expanding ambitions in the programming domain. While the company already holds a strong position with products like ChatGPT and Codex, acquiring Windsurf could further strengthen its foothold. Moreover, this move could open up new opportunities within OpenAI’s strategic partnership with Microsoft — an investor in OpenAI and the owner of GitHub, a major player in the coding tools ecosystem.

Negotiations are still ongoing, and it is not yet clear when the deal will be finalized. However, both the tech and investment communities are closely monitoring the situation. If completed, the acquisition would serve as a clear example of how AI can be flexibly applied not only in information processing but also in software development and engineering.
