OpenAI is shutting down its ChatGPT Atlas browser, which was launched last year

OpenAI has announced that it will be shutting down its ChatGPT Atlas desktop browser project. The company said the app will be completely deprecated on August 9, 2026.

OpenAI spokesperson James Sun said that the experience and features gained from Atlas users have now been integrated into the new ChatGPT desktop app. Instructions on how to transition will be sent to users via in-app notifications and email in the coming days.

The company explains the decision with a strategy to unify products into a single ecosystem. The new ChatGPT desktop app now includes Codex for programming, ChatGPT Work agent for performing work tasks, and built-in web search functions. Therefore, it is said that there is no need for a separate AI browser.

In addition, OpenAI announced that it will continue to support the Google Chrome extension so that users can continue to use existing browsers.

ChatGPT Atlas was introduced in October 2025 exclusively for macOS. The closure of the project in less than a year is considered one of the steps taken by OpenAI to optimize its product portfolio in recent times.
