OpenAI has confirmed that it will combine several existing artificial intelligence models into a new and improved model called GPT-5.
Currently, the ChatGPT platform offers a variety of models tailored for different functions. For example, the o3 model primarily supports reasoning capabilities, while the 4o model features multimodal abilities. This diversity has caused some confusion among users.
At the "Building the Future with OpenAI Agents" conference, OpenAI representative Romain Yeo stated,
“We are excited not only to create a completely new state-of-the-art model but also to merge our two main model series.”
The new GPT-5 model will incorporate both reasoning skills and multimodal functions. In other words, this model will be able to process different types of input data — such as text, images, and documents — and provide responses with thoughtful and well-reasoned answers. As a result, users will no longer need to switch between different models to achieve optimal results.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the model will be released to the public this summer.
