OpenAI has announced a major update to its programming tool Codex. The update will be rolled out to users logged in with a ChatGPT account starting April 16, 2026, in a phased manner on the desktop app.
In the new version, Codex can now run directly on a computer. According to the statement, the artificial intelligence agent can control applications “by seeing, clicking, and writing with its cursor.” In addition, multiple agents can run in parallel and perform various tasks without interfering with the user’s activity.
This feature is currently only active on the macOS operating system. It is said that this feature will be available for users living in the European Union and the United Kingdom at a later date.
As part of the update, the application also adds a built-in browser. Users can now give precise instructions to the agent directly from web pages.
Codex can also create and iterate images using the new gpt-image-1.5 model. This feature is considered especially useful for creating mockups, building games, and other visual projects.
In addition, more than 90 new plugins have been introduced for Codex. These plugins extend the agent's functionality, allowing it to perform more operations and collect data in a broader context.
