Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation console games starting in January 2028. All new games released after that date will be available only in digital format.
The company said that the decision will not apply to games that have been released or are planned to be released in disc format before January 2028. Sony stressed that the move reflects the growing demand for digital content in the gaming and entertainment industry.
Analysts say the decision could put additional pressure on retailers that rely on physical game sales. A decline in physical game sales in recent years has led to the closure of a number of game stores.
Sony's rapid transition to a digital sales model coincides with the company's ongoing legal process.
The company has offered a settlement of $7.85 million to resolve a class action lawsuit filed in the United States over allegations of anti-competitive behavior on the PlayStation Store platform.
Although Sony has denied the charges, a hearing in the case, where the court will evaluate the settlement agreement, is scheduled for October 2026.
