OpenAI restructures compensation strategy in response to Meta’s hiring spree

After Meta successfully recruited several leading researchers from OpenAI, OpenAI’s leadership has responded to internal concerns by announcing that they are working on new incentive and reward strategies for their employees.

OpenAI’s Chief Research Officer, Mark Chen, wrote in a message on the company’s internal Slack platform:
“I feel as if someone has broken into our home and stolen something.”

According to a message obtained by Wired, Chen added that he, CEO Sam Altman, and other leaders have been working around the clock in recent days, actively engaging with employees who have received offers from Meta:
“We have been more proactive than ever before. We are revisiting our compensation structure and exploring creative ways to recognize and reward our top talent.”

Recent media reports have named eight researchers who have left OpenAI to join Meta, causing significant concern within OpenAI.

Sam Altman mentioned in a podcast that Meta sometimes offers signing bonuses as high as $100 million. However, Meta’s management has internally pushed back against these claims, describing the figures as exaggerated.

Currently, competition for talented professionals in the artificial intelligence industry is extremely intense. OpenAI appears to be working hard both to defend its position against rivals and to prevent further brain drain from within.

This situation indicates that competition over skilled workers and salary wars in the technology sector are likely to intensify even further in the coming years.
