Pakistan Tax Authority Investigates Wealthy Citizens Through Social Media

Pakistan’s tax authority has adopted a new method to monitor the incomes of wealthy individuals. According to Reuters, amid global challenges in tax collection, officials have started reviewing the social media accounts of the country’s rich citizens to identify discrepancies between their income and spending.

A special unit called the “Lifestyle Monitoring Cell” has been established under the Federal Tax Authority. Staff members analyze the social media posts of celebrities, businesspeople, and real estate agents. These checks help identify individuals who lead lavish lifestyles but fail to pay taxes.

Evidence collected by the tax authorities, such as screenshots and post dates, can be used to initiate investigations into money laundering.

The tax authority is particularly monitoring extravagant weddings. For example, one wedding under review reportedly cost organizers $878,000, covering expenses such as gold, diamonds, expensive bridal gowns, gourmet food, hired musicians, and even drone light shows.
