Gaming platform Roblox has launched new age-based account types globally to improve the safety of underage users. Under the new system, chat is disabled by default on “Roblox Kids” accounts, which are designed for children ages 5 to 8. “Roblox Select” accounts, which are designed for users ages 9 to 15, are gradually expanding access to the platform based on the user’s age.
The company said that parents will be able to manage their children’s friend lists, approve trusted friend requests, set screen time and spending limits, and adjust chat and game access settings for children up to 16 years old.
Users 16 and older who want to use Roblox’s full features must go through an age verification process using ID or facial recognition technology. Social media links will also be available only to users over 16 who have verified their age.
