Russia has risen to 5th place in personal data breaches

In 2024, 1.58 billion personal data records were leaked in Russia, marking a 31.7% increase compared to the previous year. With this, Russia ranked fifth globally in data breaches.

The countries with the highest number of data leaks are:

USA – 5.53 billion records

China – 3.93 billion

India – 2.34 billion

Spain – 2.08 billion

Russia – 1.58 billion

While the number of data breach incidents in Russia decreased, the volume of leaked data increased. This stands in contrast to the USA, India, and China, where breaches dropped by 32-69% due to stronger regulations. In Russia, such a trend is not observed. Most breaches were recorded in the trade, IT, industry, government agencies, and banking sectors. Experts predict that cyberattacks on Russian companies will continue, and the number of incidents will rise. They also emphasize that heavy fines will not be effective, as large companies are passing the handling of personal data to smaller firms to avoid significant financial penalties.
