Sam Altman eyes acquisition of space startup

The Wall Street Journal reports that Sam Altman has been in talks to acquire the rocket manufacturing startup Stoke Space. Altman’s goal was to create a competitor to Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

According to sources, Altman was prepared to invest billions of dollars in the startup in stages and take full control of it. Stoke Space was founded by former Blue Origin engineers and focuses on developing reusable rockets. However, the negotiations are currently reported to be on hold.

Altman’s main plan is to establish data centers in space in the future. He believes that moving these centers to space is more efficient due to the energy demands and environmental challenges associated with running computers on Earth.

This move could further intensify Altman’s competition with Elon Musk, as he had already launched a new startup called Merge Labs in August, which rivals Musk’s Neuralink project.
