SanDisk has updated its logo

SanDisk, a maker of external storage and memory cards, has unveiled its new logo. The logo is based on pixels, the smallest unit of information.

SanDisk partnered with ELA Advertising to create this new visual identity ahead of its separation from parent company Western Digital in 2024. The new minimalist logo retains the previous "D", while the "S" is transformed into a cone shape and a small pixel square.

The logo's design was intended to depict the future. The creators paid special attention to the red cone shape, reminiscent of NASA, considering how the logo would look on spacecraft.

SanDisk was founded in 1988 as SunDisk and changed its name in 1995. Western Digital acquired SanDisk in 2016 for $15.59 billion. Last year, Western Digital announced plans to separate its external storage and hard drive businesses into separate companies.

The logo update also took into account feedback from former employees of the company. The positive public reception of the new logo was an additional encouragement for the designers.
