The CEOs of some of the biggest social platforms will appear before the US Congress on Wednesday to defend their companies against growing criticism that they are doing too little to protect children and teenagers online.
Tech companies often appease Congress by sending legal counsel or policymakers. But it will be done in the final hearing. Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, X (formerly Twitter) CEO Linda Yaccarino, TikTok CEO Shou Chew, Discord's Jason Citron and Snap's Evan Spiegel will appear before Congress. Zuckerberg and Chew are the only executives who have agreed to appear voluntarily without a subpoena.
The hearing will be titled "Big Tech and the Online Child Sexual Exploitation Crisis." Lawmakers are likely to examine a number of concerns, both recent and ongoing, about social platforms' failure to protect young users from harmful content.
