Sora has made a strong debut on the Android platform. According to new calculations from app analytics provider Appfigures, Sora reached approximately 470,000 installs in existing markets on its first day in the Google Play Store.
This figure is more than four times larger than its iOS launch on Android. However, Appfigures notes that the comparison is not entirely fair. On iOS, Sora was initially available only in the U.S. and Canada and exclusively via invite, whereas the Android release spanned a wider range of markets, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, with OpenAI removing the invite requirement in major markets by the end of October.
Despite its initial exclusivity, Sora became a major hit on iOS, surpassing one million installs in its first week and quickly reaching the top of the App Store charts. It currently ranks 4th on the iPhone Free Apps chart in the U.S. App Store.
Appfigures also revised its previous estimates for Sora’s iOS installs. Initial projections suggested about 56,000 first-day installs, but the updated estimate is around 110,000.
For comparison, 296,000 of the 470,000 Android installs came from the U.S., indicating sustained interest in the AI video creation app even after the initial iOS launch hype subsided.
Sora allows users to create videos using text prompts powered by AI. These videos can include AI-animated versions of users and friends via a feature called “Cameos”. Videos are presented in a vertical scrollable format, similar to TikTok, enabling users to explore creations made by others using the technology.
After debuting in the U.S., Sora now faces competition from rivals such as Meta AI, which recently launched its mobile app for European users.
