SpaceX has announced that it will acquire artificial intelligence startup Cursor in a $60 billion all-stock deal. The deal comes just days after SpaceX’s historic IPO and is aimed at bolstering the company’s AI efforts.
Founded in 2022 as Anysphere, Cursor has become one of the most valuable startups on the market in recent years amid the rapid rise of AI-based programming tools. The company previously participated in OpenAI’s startup accelerator and has raised billions of dollars in investment.
Cursor was reportedly preparing to close a new $2 billion investment round at a $50 billion valuation in the near future. However, SpaceX’s proposed $60 billion acquisition deal has changed those plans.
SpaceX says the deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026. The company intends to use Cursor’s technologies to increase its competitiveness in the AI field and develop corporate artificial intelligence products.
The acquisition is seen as a key part of SpaceX's AI strategy. The company said in a filing to investors that it sees trillions of dollars in opportunities in the artificial intelligence market. SpaceX's stock price has risen rapidly since the IPO, adding nearly $1 trillion to the company's market value in a short period of time.
