Spotify introduces in-app messaging feature

Spotify is introducing a new feature that allows users to chat with each other directly within the app. Until now, users had to rely on platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, or TikTok to share their favorite music or podcasts with friends. With this update, such sharing can now take place entirely inside Spotify. The feature also keeps a complete history of shared content, making it easy to revisit old shares.

Chats will only be available between two people. You can start a conversation with someone you’ve previously shared content with, created joint playlists, or participated in Blend or Jam sessions together. Additionally, users subscribed to Family or Duo plans will also be able to use the feature. When a chat request is sent, the other person needs to accept it.

Outside Spotify, you can accept a chat invitation by clicking on a Spotify link sent to you. Alternatively, you can send an invite link to contacts.

The company says that messages are encrypted during storage and transmission but not end-to-end encrypted. Spotify may monitor messages to detect content that violates its rules. Users can report inappropriate messages, which will then be reviewed under Spotify’s policies.

To access messages, tap on your profile picture and open the “Messages” section on the left side. You can also react to messages with emojis.

The feature will be available for both free and Premium users but only for those over 16. For now, it is limited to mobile apps and some Latin American countries. Spotify announced that in the coming weeks, the feature will also roll out to the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the European Union, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand.
