Jaslan Madiyev, head of the Digital Development Ministry of Kazakhstan, said that an agreement has already been reached with Telegram to open an office in the country.
He stressed that a representative will be appointed for the messenger. This is required by local legislation, so all internet platforms are required to have a representative in the country.
Madiev believes that this will "increase control over content" on Telegram. At the same time, the minister added that the authorities are already cooperating with the messenger "to promptly remove illegal content and block destructive channels":
The agreement with Telegram to appoint a representative and open an office is an important step to increase content control.
In July, Pavel Durov reported that 12.5 million of Kazakhstan's 20 million people use Telegram every month, which is a 25% increase compared to last year.
