Tesla has reserved 90% of the capacity of its giant solar power plant in advance

Tesla has agreed to purchase 90% of the electricity generated by the Sterling renewable energy project in Arizona, USA, under a long-term contract. The project will feature a 509 MW solar power plant and 360 MW of energy storage.

ContourGlobal, the company implementing the project, plans to put the power plant into operation in 2028. Although financial details of the agreement were not disclosed, such agreements are usually concluded for a period of 10–15 years.

The partnership will allow Tesla to power its operations with renewable energy until at least the end of the 2030s. The remaining 10% of the energy will be sold by ContourGlobal on the open energy market.

The Sterling project is currently considered ContourGlobal's largest renewable energy project. The power plant will connect to the Western Area Power Administration grid and will be able to supply power to the California market in addition to Arizona.

The project's 360 MW battery system can store approximately 1,440 MWh of energy for four hours. This will make it possible to supply electricity to the grid even after sunset.
