The “Copilot Mode” feature has been launched in the Microsoft Edge browser

Microsoft has introduced a new AI-powered feature called “Copilot Mode” in its popular Edge browser. This feature allows users to browse the web with the assistance of an AI helper. The goal is for the AI to understand what the user is searching for, anticipate their intentions, and take actions on their behalf.

Currently, “Copilot Mode” is in an experimental phase and must be enabled by the user. The feature is available for free to Mac and PC users.

When activated, users can search, chat with the AI, and navigate the web from a new tab page with Copilot’s help. They can also request additional assistance from Copilot while visiting any webpage. For example, a user can ask how to make a recipe vegan, and Copilot will suggest appropriate substitutions.

Unlike typical AI chatbots, this eliminates the need for users to copy and paste the content they want to reference.

Additionally, Copilot can perform various tasks such as scheduling appointments, creating shopping lists, and drafting text for users.

Microsoft views this new feature as a major step forward in AI-powered browsers. The aim is to simplify everyday tasks, such as booking a hotel room on Booking.com or a flight via Kayak. However, in some cases, interacting directly with the website might be quicker or easier than chatting with the AI, depending on the user’s familiarity with the site.

Copilot also supports voice commands, which can be helpful for users who are less tech-savvy or have limited mobility. In the future, users will be able to provide Copilot with additional information, such as credentials or browsing history, to enable more advanced automated actions like bookings.

One of the most interesting features is Copilot’s ability to view and analyze all open tabs, which can assist with product comparisons or online research across multiple sites.

Microsoft emphasizes that Copilot can access browsing data only with the user’s permission and that this access will be transparent to users. Still, the idea of a feature that can monitor and listen during browsing may raise privacy concerns for some.
